Within the first eight months of implementation, results show that the Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras were successful in encouraging positive driver behaviour in Guelph. ASE cameras are a part of the City’s Vision Zero strategy to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roadways to zero.
The City began using ASE cameras in August 2023. The cameras were placed in school zones because they have high volumes of pedestrians and cyclists. The goal was to promote positive driving habits while reducing the number of collision-related deaths and serious injuries on our roads.
In May 2024, the City published data collected from the first eight ASE camera locations. The data shows drivers were three times more likely to drive under the posted speed limit in these same locations when an ASE camera was in use, as compared to the speed levels before their installation. The biggest change was recorded along Stephanie Drive where drivers were six times more likely to drive under the posted speed limit when the ASE camera was present compared to the speed compliance before installation of the camera.

As demonstrated by their initial success, the City will continue operating ASE cameras as an important tool to enhance road safety in Guelph.
