The Transportation Master Plan, Moving Guelph Forward (TMP), approved in January 2022, is an important update to the previous plan published in 2005. The updated plan incorporates new policies and plans adopted since 2005, such as the Natural Heritage Strategy, the Cycling Master Plan, and updates to the Official Plan.
The TMP also recommends new policies and guidelines that reflect our community’s vision and balance mobility, environment and efficiency while prioritizing safety and access for all travellers. As the City looks forward, the plan explores how new and evolving technologies and travel services will shape the future of transportation in Guelph.
Since its approval in 2022, the TMP has led to:
- Completion of the Downtown Parking Master Plan
- Preliminary design studies for 15 kilometers of the Cycling Spine Network
- Completion of the Emma Street to Earl Street active transportation bridge Environmental Assessment
- Approval of Guelph Transit’s Future-Ready Action Plan for network and service-level improvements over 10 years
- Guelph Transit acquiring 11 electric buses
- Updated Transportation Impact Study Guidelines to support development applications
- Adding four new full-time equivalent staff to implement Vision Zero
Guided by the updated plan, the City has initiated several other projects that will make it easier to get around Guelph. Ongoing projects include but are not limited to:
- The Complete Streets Design and Multi-modal Level of Service Guidelines
- The Goods Movement Strategy
- A Vision Zero Action Plan
- A Transportation Demand Management Action Plan and
- The Active Transportation Wayfinding Strategy.
As work progresses, the Transportation Master Plan will continue making it easier to get around Guelph by providing travel options that suit different needs and abilities. The TMP will shape how we travel and how goods move to and from local businesses for the next 30 years.
