The planning for the South End Community Centre (SECC) has been in the works since the early 2000s, and in October 2023, dreams became a reality when the City was able to celebrate the start of construction. This 160,000 square foot facility will provide residents in the area with two ice rinks, an aquatic centre, double gymnasium, walking track and multi-purpose rooms, all connected by a central lobby.
Construction of the centre will include elements to support the City’s net-zero energy goals, significantly reducing the building’s carbon footprint and promoting sustainable practices that help Guelph align with the City’s Race to Zero.
The SECC will be part of a hub of activity for the community which includes the SECC, South End Community Park, Larry Pearson Ball Diamonds, and Bishop Macdonell Catholic High School. This hub provides a central location for residents in the South end of Guelph to gather, connect and engage with one another. The centre will also attract visitors to Guelph, boosting local economic activity and creating new opportunities for businesses.
This new, highly anticipated community centre is on track to open in the second half of 2026.
Once this centre opens its doors, it will provide a welcoming, community space for south Guelph residents that will contribute to Guelph’s growing needs.
