The City of Guelph launched its Climate Adaptation plan in July 2023. The plan aims to enhance the City’s resilience and ensure long-term sustainability by identifying potential risks, setting specific goals, and outlining necessary actions to protect our assets from the impacts of climate change. Through these efforts, the plan was able to outline 163 adaptation measures and/or actions that will be implemented across the City. By proactively addressing climate-related risks, the City can take steps toward protecting our infrastructure and promoting a more resilient future for our community. This aligns with the City’s net-carbon community and Race To Zero goals.
Recognizing that climate change is a global issue that necessitates local attention, the City remains devoted in its commitment to combatting climate change. Already implementing various measures to support its transition towards becoming a net-carbon community and contributing to the race to zero emissions. Some of these include:
- Working with Parks to design and upgrade low impact development features around our culture and recreation facilities
- Updating the Environmental Impact Study (EIS) guidelines to clarify that thermal impacts to surface water features are to be assessed as part of the stormwater quality and quantity controls
- Establishing an Integrated Water Management Strategy for Guelph
This project aligns with the City’s overarching goal of sustainability and environmental stewardship.
